Das Liberale Forum, kurz LIF, steht fünfzehn Jahre nach seiner Gründung beinahe vor dem Aus. Am 4. Februar 1993 gründeten fünf ehemalige FPÖ-Mitglieder (Heide Schmidt, Klara Motter, Friedhelm Frischenschlager, Hans Helmut Moser, Thomas Barmüller) diese Parte unter dem Vorsitz Heide Schmidts. Der Grund war das von Kritikern als ausländerfeindlich betrachtete “Österreich zuerst”-Volksbegehren der FPÖ; die Begründer des LIF wollten wieder eine klassisch-liberale Partei formieren, wie sie seit dem Aufstieg Haiders in der FPÖ in Österreich nicht mehr existierte. Doch seit dem Einzug in den Nationalrat 1994 mit 6 Prozent war der Stimmenanteil stetig im Sinkflug. Seit 1999 war die Partei nicht mehr im Nationalrat vertreten und nach dem Ende der Koalition am 7. Juli 2008 kam schon bald die Meldung, dass das Liberale Forum kandidieren wolle.
Für Heide Schmidt ist das Projekt LIF “abgeschlossen”. Trotz vielversprechender Umfragewerte zwischen 3 und 5 Prozent erhielt das LIF nur 1,9 Prozent der Stimmen.
“Ich sehe keinen Grund mehr weiterzukämpfen. Das Projekt ist abgeschlossen”, erklärte Schmidt. Und weiters schloss sie es dezidiert aus, noch einmal politisch aktiv zu werden. Der Finanzier der Partei, Hans Peter Haselsteiner, sieht ebenfalls keine Zukunft für die Partei. Er kündigte an, den Geldhahn abzudrehen.
Am Parteitag Anfang November wird die entgültige Entscheidung fallen, welche Zukunft dem Liberalen Forum beschieden ist. Es bleibt spannend, ob sich die Weiterführung der Partei in Anbetracht der aktuellen Umstände noch lohnt.
